I heard that collars were bad for small dogs, is that true? What do you use?

I use a harness. Collars can cause collapsed trachea in small dogs.

Yes collars are bad for dogs. Harnesses all the way!!! Collars can damage little dogs throats(trachea) because collars pull on the neck of the little dogs. I only use and promote collars for decorative purposes and collars are good to have on your dog if you are letting them run around in the back yard, so you still have thier tags on them in case they get out. But when you are walking you chi's harnesses are best :)

I bought a harness for Chuwee as that is what the breeder told me to get. He has a collar on just for ID purposes and his little bell so I can hear him:)

I haven't had a chance to bring Chili out for a walk as of yet, due to the cold weather here in NY. But once it warms up, I will be purchasing a harness for our walks. I use a collar on him more or less for an accessory! It looks cute on him, but I would never walk him on it!

I saw a family at petsmart the other day and they had a chi, but they were using a collar and jerking on the leash and dragging the pore chi, and it makes me kinda sad to know that ppl have dogs when they dont know how to take care of them. :(

I think harnesses are much better. Escesially for puppies, because some puppies don't like to walk on leashes, ect, so you have to give them a little tug and there necks are so small and delicate that a collar might bother ther neck. And when they are on a harness the dont even feel like they are on a leash, being walked or pulled, ect.

I use harnesses when walking them on a leash but I like to dress them up in pretty collars - never with a leash though.

I use a harnass for Bo, because he used to "hack", which sounded like he was choking when he wore a collar. I asked the vet & he said that it was probably a collapsed trachea. He recommended that I get a harness for him. Now he hardly ever "hacks", except when he pulls very hard or gets very excited. I've also used a harness on Boquet, but right now she has a collar because the tags attached to the O-ring on the harnass made a raw spot on her neck under her chin. I've tried several things to heal it, so now it's not red, just she has no hair there. Besides, she doesn't seem to have as much problem with her trachea as Bo does.

We use harness only with all our small dogs. The dogs could ( and have ) slipped out of the collar at inopportune times and there is the possiblity of harm with a collar as I see it. We also use crates and a collar and crates don't mix.

My Chis wear collars with ID tags when they are in the house or in the yard, but if we go out walking they wear harnesses.

I use harnesses for my two. Little Diva is too small to wear a collar and my breeder discouraged me from using them because yes they can damage the wind pipe just like choke chains are frowned upon bigger dog because they can damage the wind pipe.Diva has a sparkly hot pink harness and Froot Loop has a baby blue harness with paw prints. I attached my dog's rabies and ID tags to the harness, I think it depends on what type of device you use.

Well, I couldn't vote because I use both. You need a collar for the I.D. tag. But I use a harness for walking. You can't leave the harness on all the time or he/she will get raw armpits.

I usually leave the collars off, all the jingling makes me crazy. Although, since were having to take them out on leashes since the fence is down, weve been keeping the collars on until their last outing for the night. We have collars for walking and dog-parking.

Is 7 months too young to shock a dog on? Because my pup is starting to wonder around the neighbors house and when i call her to come in, she just ignores me. I just recently bought the Walk with Wick book and I am am going to try to go by his shock collar method, if she is not too young.
