What type of eatter is your Chi? Do they inhale their food, are they picky eatters, do they take a bite run away then come back and eat some more, etc? I'm just curious:)

I have one of both types of eaters, one eats everything all at once and the other eats when he feels like it. I tried to schedule their meals but it makes it a little more difficult havingtwo distinct types of eaters.
The breeder uses Science Diet which has a corn /chicken base. I have learned through years of experince that Avoderm is a better food for my dogs ( lamb, rice base). No dry skin , and less poop. Nutro Ultra puppie food is ok but it has a synthetic vitaime K that is supect. I use no wet or canned food at all.
For dogs who are chow hounds ( like Cisco) I have used 1/2 Avoderm and 1/2 canned green beans ( not French cut, hahahaha). This adds vitaimes without the fat, and it doesn't mess the dogs stool consistancy.

Sandy will gobble the canned food up in about 2 seconds(when she gets it) and she just eats a few bites of dry food here and there throughout the day.

Sandy used to love cat food as well. We used to have a bunch of cats and she would eat so much cat food that she would puke it all up!

With four, they tend to grab and hide it for later and come back to see how much more they can grab!
I have begun to demand that they earn what they get by sitting or some other trick. It seems to settle them the tiniest bit! LOL

Fernando is extremely picky. I've attempted to switch his foods since the vet said that he might be getting too much sodium from the science diet, but he turns his nose up at everything else. in light of the recent recalls and such I'm thinking of attepting to switch him again. as far as his type of eating, he eats throughout the day, i refer to him as a grazer. Although that's been kinda tough since we got the great dane puppy, she'll eat everything she can get into!:p

Hello, Im new here and have a new Chi puppy,we got him at 6 weeks, he is now 3 months and is 1lb 12 oz. and the size of a coke can, we feed him often though out the day, and he just inhales it. We have cats and have to lock "Bandit" up or he will inhale their food before they can get to it.
We are feeding him mighty dog can food, 2 of the small cans a day, half at each feeding. How do you get him to stop enhaling his and the cats food.
I have been reading here, about Royal canine, looked it up and it says to use the babydog 30 for my puppy. Im hopeing he dont choke because he inhales.
any suggestions.
Attached a pic of Bandit sleeping with one of my cats. these two get along great.
Thanks,
Sharon

Hi there!
I also have a young puppy, she is now 9 weeks old. We had a similar problem, it's like she didn't know how to eat. I got my girl way too early (4 weeks old) because the mom wasn't feeding them well. I hand fed her for a almost 2 weeks with a bottle of puppy formula and slowly introduced to her the Royal Canine Babydog food with puppy formula letting it soak for at least a minute helped her to slow her eating/swallowing and I was less nervous of her choking. At 7 weeks I eliminated the formula and wetting her food, she now does a great job eating her Royal Canin Puppy 33. I hope this helps;)

Thank you for replying,
A friend has a small maltees puppy, and her vet said to give him Iams puppy food,
Does any one know which is better for the puppy, Iams or Royal Canin? Or does it really matter.

My chi loves the chunky food in pouches. I am trying to get her to eat dry food so I have been mixing it with the chunky. She mostly picks out the wet chunky food and leaves the dry food. If she is really hungry she will wolf it down, but otherwise she eats a little, leaves to be with me, and then goes back for a little more.

Toby will sometimes eat at his food bowl sitting down, but he eats a lot, but when he's not in such a hurry, he'll take a piece of food and run off, then come back. My late pomchi would take a few bits of food and go to wherever we were, then drop them and eat only the bones.

Cisco, our sassy little 1 year old Chi has developed this little quirk. We have central heat and A/C and here in the Oregon forest ( 3900 ft elevation ) we have cold mornings so Cisco has to have his meal on a warm blanket that sit over the floor vent in the kitchen. Cisco likes a table spoon of canned Avoderm mixed with his 1/2 cup of dry Avoderm. There he eats , then after a while picks bits out of the bowl and plays at attacking it,b before eating it.
Where his big brother Poncho doesn't care where you put his food, as he is a chow hound. Poncho likes a little canned Avoderm mixed with his 1/2 cup of dry Avoderm but with a 1/4 cup of canned green beans with juice. We learned that giving him the green beans ( nothing fancy, they don't have to be French cut or anything, LOL) give him vitaimes without the fat and are filling since he is a big eater. No stool problems either . Our Manchesters liked green beans as well, so we have had good history with green beans.
Funny how each dog is different in eating habits , just like people.

Its like a race here at feeding time. They get fed twice a day. And it's just that a race to see if the lab or the chi will finish first. He is an inhaler, they both are thats why we limit them to twice a day or I would be pushing them both around in wheel barrows!

Bo grabs a mouth full and runs, drops it and eats his kibbles one at a time. Generally, he is running to where one of us are so he is in the same room with us. Then runs back for more. Sometimes, he will sit at his bowl and eat but not often since his boxer pal likes to be a HOG!
Zethsmommy

Zeth is a little stinker when it comes to eating his food. He'll stare at the bowl and watch his big sister Sandy eat all of hers and then he starts to cry. Zeth has always wanted to be hand fed with a spoon. I scoop a little of wet and kibble on the spoon and then have to reach to him and he'll lap it up and crunch one kibble at a time. It's doing a number on my knees crouching down and spoon feeding him but he has this little expression on his face that makes it all worth the while.
In the evenings I usually toss a handfull of puppy kibble his way while he's playing with his toys. He gobbles those right up.
We currently have him on Merrick Puppy plate and Nutro puppy kibble.
