Hey- I'm new here (old to Yorkietalk) and may be in the market for a chi.
I am in the Sac. area and am looking for a black/tan chi. Not really wanting the short hair type...
Anyone know of a good breeder? Any qualms about the breed (haha i know everyone here LOVES their babies, but any downsides?) I have a yorkie, so I know about the yappy, hyper type
any tips would be SOOOO helpful!!

Hi,

There are lots of breeders in the Sacramento area, just check the PennySaver (http://www.pennysaverusa.com) as they often have Chihuahua pups there.

I breed Chiuahuas too, but at this time I only have the short haired variety.

Hi sdz...

Just thought of letting you know a few facts about Chihuahuas...

Being the smallest dogs, they have a fragile bone structure. You need to be very careful with them when you hold them in your lap. A sudden jerk or a sudden fall from your lap or from the back of the sofa may cause an injury to them.

So, if you have kids at home you should be very careful.

Also, Chihuahuas tend to cling to 1 or 2 persons in the family. And if they see any threat or anyone approaching towards what they consider is THEIRS, they may turn very aggressive, yappy and snappy.

The latter is a behavioral trait and can be handled with early socialisation and training.

Could you decide on the breeder?

Being the 'parents' of two 12 week old Chi boys ( and having had other several small breeds over the years) I would emphasize the need to socialize these dogs , particularly since they tend to bond to one or two persons.
Being a pervious owner of several terriors (terrors), I can say Terriors have a stuborn streek trait, the Chi's also tend to be a little hard headed. With a little concentrated effort and consistancy at the puppy learning stage the Chi's can be cultivated and domesticated. They must understand that YOU are the leader of the pack, if not then They will own you and not vise versa. Hahaha
We have had great success with our boys and they are shaping up just fine to our lifestyle.
