I can't believe this has happened....Thursday night right as I was about to leave work, my hubby called and said he thinks Gracie has broken her leg. I freaked, asked what happened, and tried to stay calm as he sometimes overreacts to things that end up being a scrape or bruise (we have a 6 year old skin son as well!!) He said she had figured out how to jump up on the couch and as he entered the room, she ran to the edge and jumped off. First, I didn't think she could jump onto the couch, she only weighs 3 1/2 pounds, and then I didn't think she'd be BRAVE enough to sail off!! Sure enough, when I got home, not only was it obviously broken but displaced as well. You could tell she was in alot of discomfort, so I took her immediately to the vet, not even taking time to go potty myself!! Got there, they gave her some anesthesia and took some xrays, she fought the whole time, and gave her a pretty red cast to wear for a while. Followed up the next day with our regular vet who said he didn't "think" she would need surgery, but plan on the cast for about 2 months. It was broken at the growth plate and dislocated off. If surgery is needed, it is off to the vet school 3 hours away as she is so tiny they do not feel comfortable working on her. She is pitiful and I feel awful. Hubby is worse. She has to be carried almost everywhere, even though today she has figured out how to hobble on three legs. She can't bend over to eat since her cast goes all the way to her shoulder, and she can't steady herself to potty. If you put her down to do something, like cook dinner or laundry, she lays there and cries until you pick her up again. I don't know if she is hurting or not. Worse, the pain meds they gave her gave her a GI bleed so we had to stop them. Basically, she is a little infant with fur!! I rigged up a scarf to carry her around as she HATES a bag, and that seems to be a little better. She can't even get into her bed!! It is sad!! So, if you all will, please say a prayer for a speedy recovery and a nanny to come help!!

Poor baby, I'll bet one of the "boys" put her on the couch and forgot to put her down on the floor. I hope the cast is holding her set bones well or they will have to rebreak her leg for the surgery.

I know she is in good hands with you, and she is getting all the attention she will need to make a full recovery.

Kiss her nose from me and the pack!

Thanks DragonLady!! Unfortunately, the break is not healing as well as we hoped. It is still quite displaced, and we return to the vet on Friday (we go every week) to get xray'd again, and then go from there as far as trying to reset it, break it again, or surgery. If it is surgery, it will be done out of town as no one here can operate on such tiny bones. She is happy and playful, as if nothing is wrong at all. I thought as you did, that maybe on of the boys set her on the couch, but nope, she demonstrated her proficiency at jumping on the couch WITH her cast on. She got a stern no, but we now baby gate her away from the furniture when we are not in the room with her. She's a dare-devil!! Again, thanks and I will keep you guys posted.

Aww..... how is she feeling?

My little Cole jumps on and off the couch all the time. If he ever broke something, I would be a basketcase!

Kiss her and give snuggles from me, and I'll keep her in my prayers!

I meant to post last night but fell asleep...thanks to all for the prayers for little Gracie. We went back to the vet with full expectations of surgery, the vet felt the same. They did another xray and she is FULLY healed!! He couldn't believe it. The bones are aligned perfectly and the break looks great. I was really concerned as she had eaten her cast/splint completely off on Monday. I found underneath it all that the emergency vet had placed non-porous, waterproof tape DIRECTLY on her skin. It caused an allergic reaction and she has no skin/hair on the leg now. My vet was HOT to say the least. I had been doing dressing/splint changes every day and massaging the break so it must have worked. She is walking on it and running some, until she notices that you are looking at her, then up with the leg for a sympathy trip!! She is completely rotten now. Again, thanks to all for your thoughts and prayers!!:D
