 I'm getting a puppy this week and i think i should crate train him. 1) this will help with the potty training and 2) it will keep him safe while im away at work. The thing is...I work 9am-6pm and wont be able to go home for lunchtime. Is that too long to have him in his crate? but if i dont do the crate thing...how will i house break him? HELP!

That is a terribly long time to be in a crate, and you cannot possibly expect him to NOT potty that entire time.
Will there be anyone else at home with him while you are gone?
Maybe you could find a sitter?
Just some ideas for you....
Not to be know-it-all or pessimistic, but getting a puppy and forcing him to be in a crate 10 hours a day isn't fair to a puppy....please rethink your decision if this is the intent for your baby.

I agree thats a very long time to stay in a crate we crate trained Sophie later when we were having a hard time getting her potty trained we got her when my husband and I knew Id be home to train her and give her all the attention and training needed. If no one can go and let your pup out every couple of hours Id recommend waiting on getting one... you'll really enjoy being there to train him and hell do wonderfully with crate training if you do it right and let him out to go potty at least ever three hours...;)
