I am very unhappy with the breeder we got our Chi from. He was a surprise from my husband who did not know how to go about finding a reputable breeder. First problem was she let him go at 5wks old, second problem he has fleas!!! When my husband called her about it she was not concerned in the least.

Not happy with my breeder either. She was more of an animal lover gone bad. LOL. She had lots of Chi's there, all inside her house. Kept in a tiny back room in cages I assume. She had three different puppies all with different mothers. Chili was the calmest and quietest of them all. There were in a house with pitbulls that her son was also going to get into breeding. They were all dirty and smelly, but I just couldn't leave him there. when I got him home he had worms and I found 2 fleas on him which I quickly got rid of. And with persistance I got rid of the worms too. Now he is happy and very healthy but I should have never bought from her, because of the conditions, but I wouldn't give him up for the world!

Have you tried Frontline spray?? I keep my dogs from getting thicks and fleas using it, you can buy it in any Vet clinic, and it's better than the Frontline you buy in regular stores (the oil) Good Luck!

We bought our chi in Puerto Rico and she is now 7 weeks. We were lucky that American Airplane let us transport her as such young age (4 wks) The breeder was excellent and his son is a Vet Tech so they took good care of her. I got her at such young age because we had to leave PR (we live in Ohio) and because I'm a vet tech he made an exception. She is now 7 wks and doing great. Is completely weaned and eat dry puppy food (in water) sleeps in her "crib" and ask to go potty outside.....she is one smart puppy and our little princess. She is in my avatar!

She's a cute one....
My breeder is the best in the world !!! She told me everything and more about chihuahuas, care, grooming, feeding ... She has chis and pomeranians and when I get there, all of the dogs (as a mather of fact bitches :)) come to me and greet me :) I could talk a whole day about my breeder ... I am really lucky to get a puppy from her !!!
Here is also her website if you are interested (although she is a little too far from you):

Is it true that if a breeder breeds more than two different breeds, you shouldnt buy from them? I read this somewhere.....I have bought two chihuahua puppys two years apart from the same breeder, pretty happy with the first pup, but she has funny balding spots here and there , they grow hair back after a few weeks , and she will bald around her face and back legs, these are no bigger than a pencil eraser, but it looks weird. genetic??? the second one is a little male , he is 9 weeks, and was just diagnosed with COCCIDIA....I have only had him less than a week, so he came with this parrisite from the breeder....My Vet put him on ALBON, both pups have had problems at a young age not eating, the first one went down, two days after buying her and getting home, I am fighting to keep the new one from doing this. He has been ill all week, diarrea.
I have since found out they are breeding King charles caviliers, poms , japinese chins and chi's, What are your thoughts?

I had a great experience with my breeder. She is in Texas at Glory Chihuahuas. I initially found her on Puppyfind.com, and called when I saw she had an all white female. I live in GA but she was willing to ship my puppy when she was 9 weeks old. My vet said my dog is a very healthy, and very sturdy dog. My breeder did a great job!

Not a breeder reference, but a rescue reference :) I was looking for a young adult, so decided to look at rescue. I found our Squirt at www.ChihuahuaRescueUSA.org (http://www.ChihuahuaRescueUSA.org)
They are mostly Midwest, based in Indiana but with some in Illiniois and Kentucky.
They did an awesome job of interviewing and checking us out. They asked what I was looking for in a Chi so they could tell me if the Chi I was looking at would be the right Chihuahua for us.
I do believe in good breeders too! If it is not for the good breeders, all we'll have left are the puppy mills and the Chihuahua will be destroyed as a breed!

we braved a major snowstorm to go meet our pup for the first time. Although I like the dog and the breeder very much, the whole experience was a little strange. So I come here for advice and for people to share their experiences.
The first weird thing is that we were not able to visit the home/facility where the pups are raised, nor did we meet her parents, even though that is what we were told in the planning.
We all met at the house of the breeders friend. She was lovely and very friendly, and we met her beautiful 1 1/2 yr old Maltese while we were there. Another weird thing was another person who was also there to meet his puppy at the same time.
The breeder arrived with 2 pups, one male & one female. At first sight, I was a little concerned. Our girl did not look like the picture we saw. The boy pup was much bigger than her. And he had a big adorable fuzzy face, where our girl has a lot of tear staining and her hair seemed much thinner. And they both smelled pretty bad. Like that pet store smell when all the dogs are together all the time. The client/friend said they all smell like that at first but when you get them home & away from the other dogs, it goes away.
So I have no reason to doubt that. But it just wasnt what I expected for our first meeting. As far as the dog is concerned, we love her. Shes mellow and friendly and seems to like us. We still want her.
But since Ive never owned a puppy before, I was wondering if this kind of scenario is normal. I see so many beautiful dogs on this site. Did your pup look a lot different when he/she was young?
Do any red flags go up for anyone about the way we met our pup? Thanks Again K

Has anyone on this forum purchased puppies from Munchkinland from Debra in Manteca, CA? I am curious because I saw her website and liked the way her puppies look and I also know there are a lot of shady breeders that claim to be reputable but in truth are nothing more than scammers. Just curious, because I like getting info from other consumers.
Thanks,
Jia

Those are all HUGE red flags. If you're unable to meet the puppies parents, or even see where they are kept on a day to day basis I would run far, far away and probably be in touch with my local humane society.
I'd ask WHY I am not able to meet the parent, etc. There should be no excuse.

Bella was an oops litter. Her breeder was planning on breeding when Lizzy mother was older. She was only 18months when she got pregnant. I think Bella was the best accidental pregnancy I could ask for.

Purhased a puppy from Darlene' chihuahua"s in Chickamuagua GA. Puppy had grade three luxating patellas in both knees at 9 months of age. $3,500 surgery to repair, let Darlene know, no response, and she is still breeding the mother and the father!!!!!!!!!! Orthopedic surgeon told me 100% genetic, both parents had to carry for the knees to be so severe. Her back legs are also bowed, also genetic flaw, according to surgeon. DO NOT BUY A DOG FROM THIS WOMAN!!!!!!! BEWARE

Boomer is a pound puppy.
He was discarded by a breeder who had a bad day.
Momma is a Walker treeing coon hound and Daddy is a Bluetick hound.
This mutt is frighteningly intelligent.

I agree with Bek. Ask tons of questions before you purchase a Maltese. Once you know the breeder is reputable I really have no problem with the pup being shipped. You may even have a reputable breeder close to you and not need the shipping. Where are you located, if I may ask?
I wish you all the best in your search

Please, please read the labels on anything you use on puppies especially that small and young. Many of these products cannot be used on puppies under 4 to 6 months old. Those chemicals can do as much damage but in a different way than not treating the fleas at all.
In addition to owning my own chihuahua baby - no I should say he owns me - I am in Vet Tech training and in class it was suggested to use a tiny bit of dawn as a bath soap and give a puppy a bath in it if they cannot use flea and tick products yet. The dawn suffocates the fleas and ticks but will not take care of the eggs if any have been laid so you will need to do it again a few times as you don't know when the eggs that are possibly left on them were laid so you don't know when they will hatch.
I personally used Skin-So-Soft on Josh when he was little like my grandfather who is a farmer, does on his horses and other animals that he did not want to use the flea products to keep the bugs away.
By the way all dogs need to be given wormer meds periodically as they can pick worms up in your back yard or any other place outside. It has nothing to do with how clean you keep your house or yard as other animals (loose dog running around the neighborhood, loose cats, squirrels, racoons etc) can leave worms, fleas and ticks in your yard so when your animals go out they get them unless you've chemically treated your yard for them and use dewormer regularly. The bottle will tell you what the schedule should be.
My dewormer product says to use it on puppies at 6, 8, 10 and 12 weeks of age so your puppy was not old enough to use it when you brought him/her home. 5 weeks is usually too early to bring home any breed - in fact some states have laws that do not allow adoption until 8 weeks or more. Chihuahuas should be way over 8 weeks as they can be prone to hypoglycemia at earlier ages especially if they are under 2 lb. As you can see I am passionate about chihuahuas and mine is the reason I decided to go into the Vet Tech profession - soon I hope. I hope this helps.

The only concern with breeder who breeds alot of different breeds is they most likely don't have time to devote to the individual dogs as they probably have many, and they arn't devoting their time to bettering the breeds as a whole by doing all the nessisary health testing for each of those breeds. If your breeder is breeding 4 different breeds, they are most likely just breeding for profit. You can also tell these types of breeder as they will have breeds that are either popular, currently "in style" and/or fetch higher prices, so they know that they will have an easy sell with a high return.
Many reputable breeders will breed 2 different breeds, sometimes simmilar breeds and other times not (We have Chihuahuas and Rottweilers!) But once you start seeing breeders with 4 or more breeds, or purebreds and mixed breeds (such as breeders who offer Yorkies and Yorkie-Poos), they are just in it for the bucks and not the dogs/breeds.
