Welcome Ida! Congrats on your new chi. I work full time so I keep mine in a kennel all day and when I get home at night I let her out to run around the backyard for an hour or so. Trixie (my chi) is 2 years old so she is pretty good about letting me know when she needs to go outside to go potty but she still occasionally goes inside. We have a 4 month old weiner dog as well and she is not potty trained so I understand about a puppy going potty everywhere! Good luck with your chi :p

Since I go to school my chi is in her kennel most the day, so when I get home I let her run around the house and outside and take her potty about every hour to potty train her, but if your using pads try putting them by the door where she will go outside to potty, this way she learns to go over there to go potty. Good luck and congrats!:)

COngrats on getting a chi and welcome to chi talk!
Puppies tend to be very active so they need lots of excersize. Just make sure you feed him every few hours to keep from having any low blood sugar problems. And yes it takes a few week for them to quit peeing whereever they want. I'd use diapers to help potty train, thats what we do.

Thank you everybody for your advices: If Georg weights about 4 pounds now, he is 11 weeks, does anybody have an ide about how much he will end at?

Hi Ida!

I'm new to the forum and fairly new to chihuahuas myself, but I'm an old hand at potty-training puppies. Be sure to get a kennel. If you let Georg run around, he will "make" a potty somewhere in your house. You want to control when and where he goes. If you want him to go outside, you must remember that they have a schedule...they pee or poop after they eat, sleep and play. For example, we take our baby out of her kennel first thing in the morning (and he might have to go out in the middle of the night...keep the kennel nearby and listen for whines. Dogs will generally NOT go in their kennels and will whine to go out). She always has to go, of course, after all night, so we have a great opportunity for LOTS of praise. Then she comes in and has breakfast. We give her about 20 minutes of play time after that, maybe 30, and off she goes outside again. She poops, and gets praise. Then she can be inside and playing for a longer time. We keep an eye on her. When she starts to get tired (you know, puppies play fast and hard, then conk out), we take her outside for another potty run. She may or may not go, but then we put her in the kennel for a nap. And it starts all over again after her nap...potty, lunch, play time, potty.

If you work, you can manage this by coming home for lunch. After a few weeks, he'll be able to last longer between times. The kennel (crate) is good for safety as well. Dogs are den animals and if they only associate good things with their crate (ie, chew toys, cuddly towels, etc) they are happy in there. We make the room dark, play music and leave her.

You always have water available for dogs, but if you are totally in charge of when they eat (3-4 times a day for sure), you can predict the pooping!

Good luck! I used to live in Norway, and we vacationed in Denmark. You live in such a beautiful place! I NEVER saw a chihuahua there! :)

Dear ichihuahua!
In the past year the chihuahua dogs popularity has rised very much! It has becommed a fashion-phenomenon...Before you never saw cihuahuas! Now the price has risen so much, that no normal peson affords one. Its about 1500-2000 £! Many dogs are stolen and many people is getting sick and poor dog from Russia and Prague etc. and is earning manymoney on the dogs! Its terrible!

Are they called chis there? When I lived in Norway, it was definitely BIG dog country. We had a collie, the neighbors had an Irish Wolfhound and there were tons of German Shepherds (Alsations). Also, of course, lovely Norwegian elkhounds.

My collie used to run away from home to the local grammar school and play with the kids on the playground. The POLICE would bring her home...so funny, she would be sitting regally in the backseat of their car.

But I never saw a chihuahua, or even a toy poodle, or a yorkie or anything like that! I am trying to imagine them there. Brrr. Does your dog have a good supply of sweaters? :)
